5 Winter Warming Soup Recipes

There’s no better time than winter to warm yourself from the inside out and dose yourself with hearty vegetables. Perfect as a flavoursome entrée, nourishing comfort food, cultural indulgence or remedy for the sniffles - soup is the unsung hero of the stormy season. We put together five of our favourite soup recipes that will have you slurping with a smile.

1. Chickpea and Tomato Moroccan Harira Soup

This cosy comfort food recipe begs to be devoured on the couch, covered in blankets, while the weather outside reminds you of your sanctuary. Due to the health benefits of Harira soup, it’s commonly eaten during Ramadan, to nourish after the fast. If you want to make the dish go further, try adding lentils or risoni pasta to the mix. Then, grab the biggest spoon you can find and let the incredible Moroccan flavours transport you to warm days beside Africa’s earthen clay cities.

2. Quick Caramelised Onion Soup

This rich and hearty starter is the perfect winter entrée; balance the subtle sweetness of the caramelised onions, with crusty bread and freshly grated parmesan. This one is intense and flavourful so we think a shallow bowl creates the perfect portion size, but of course, if you can’t get enough, you can always go back for seconds (or thirds).

3. Split Pea and Ham Hock Soup with Razorback Mustard Toast Soldiers

Whether you’re fighting off the flu, or are simply in need of a comforting ladleful of something delicious, this afternoon tea classic with a razor hot twist is about to make its way into your winter repertoire. To really make this dish sing, make sure you use a good quality ham hock, and thick seeded sourdough, toasted, buttered, and lathered in razorback mustard - are you drooling yet?

4. Quick Noodle Soup with Chilli Sauce

This light and healthy, but extremely filling dish is a godsend when you need to escape the carb-loaded recipes that saturate the season. Inspired by a traditional Vietnamese pho, this beef noodle soup perfectly balances salty, sweet, spicy and sour ingredients to ignite all corners of the palate, creating the ultimate flavour sensation. If your lips are still tingling afterwards, you know you’ve made it well.

5. Cuban Roasted Pumpkin and Carrot Soup

It’s hard to go past a classic pumpkin soup, the original winter warmer and the ultimate culinary comforter. Bring the old favourite to life with zesty Cuban flavours and notes of creamy coconut; top with rocket, toasted pumpkins seeds or some of our caramelised onions, to turn this dish into a real showstopper.

When the days are short and the wind is bracing, it’s a time to rug up and enjoy the warming recipes that get left behind in the summer heat. We hope you enjoy these recipes just as much as we do, with plenty of crunchy toast soldiers to help you fight your way through the cold. To find more of our favourite winter recipes, click here.
